This unique production by Richard Wagner hasn’t been staged in Melbourne since 1992, so opera lovers are in for a treat.
With a company of over 130 singers and musicians, Melbourne Opera’s production of Tannhauser will open the Regent Theatre to the world of grand opera for the first time. Tannhauser explores the tension between the sensual and the spiritual, and incorporates of Wagner’s most distinctive musical compositions such as the Overture, Ode to the Evening Star, Pilgrims Chorus and Elizabeth’s Greeting and Prayer.
Multi-award winning opera singer Marius Vlad will be performing the title role; he has also performed as Froh in Das Reingold at Milan’s famous La Scala. Joining him will be Herald Sun Aria winners Lee Abrahmsen and Jason Wasley as Elizabeth and Walther, Sarah Sweeting as Venus and Manfred Pohlenz as Wolfram. The opera is directed by Suzanne Chaundy, who has also produced The Abduction from the Seraglio, Mary Stuart and Der Freischutz.
Check out Tannhauser when it graces the Regent Theatre on Sunday August 14, Wednesday August 17 and Saturday August 20. Tickets are available via Ticketmaster.
